If you're visiting the capital of Tuscany and would like to discover one of the most charming cities in Emilia-Romagna, this day trip to Bologna from Florence is the perfect option. What's more, it includes a delicious Italian cooking class!

Day Trip Details

At the indicated time, you'll take a train from Florence to Bologna, where you'll arrive in less than an hour. Once there, you'll have between 3 and 4 hours of free time to explore the city at your own pace. Of course, we'll give you some suggestions so you don't miss anything the capital of Emilia-Romagna has to offer.

Once there, we recommend starting your tour in the heart of the city, in the Piazza Maggiore and the Piazza del Nettuno. Here, you'll be able to admire the impressive Basilica of San Petronio, one of the biggest in Europe, and the Fountain of Neptune, an absolute icon of Bologna.

Just a short walk away, you'll find the Archiginnasio, the former headquarters of the University of Bologna, where you can stroll through its corridors adorned with hundreds of noble coats of arms. Here, you'll find the Anatomical Theatre, a room where the first anatomy lessons were taught.

You can continue on to the Two Towers, Garisenda and Asinelli, medieval emblems of the city. Don't miss Via Rizzoli and the alleys of the Quadrilatero, Bologna's old market. Here, you can experience the true essence of Italy, among shops selling fresh handmade pasta, historic delicatessens and small trattorias.

If you have more time, we suggest taking a detour to Via Piella. Through the famous "Finestrella", you can admire the Canal delle Moline, a hidden corner of great romanticism, offering a less-seen view of Bologna.

To make the day even more special, you'll take part in a 3-hour Bolognese cooking class. You'll discover the flavours and secrets of the region's culinary tradition, and you'll even get to prepare a typical recipe yourself. During the workshop, you'll learn how to prepare 3 different types of fresh pasta with their respective sauces. At the end, you'll enjoy the meal you have prepared, along with water or a glass of wine, coffee and a dessert or fruit.

The total duration of this trip is between 11 and 12 hours.
