Covadonga Lakes, Cangas de Onís & Lastres Day Trip
Day Trip Details
We’ll begin the day by meeting at a strategic point in the center of Gijón, from where we’ll head toward the heart of Asturias, to the Picos de Europa National Park.
Our first stop will be at one of the most beautiful natural sites in northern Spain: the Covadonga Lakes. We’ll enjoy a spectacular panoramic view from the Entrelagos viewpoint, where we’ll admire the crystal-clear waters of Lakes Enol and Ercina and learn about their glacial origin.
After that, we’ll head to the majestic Basilica of Santa María la Real de Covadonga, in neo-Romanesque style, and delve into the figure of Don Pelayo and the beginning of the Reconquest. We’ll visit the Holy Cave, which houses the image of the Virgin of Covadonga, popularly known as La Santina. We’ll also see the Royal Pantheon, where the remains of ancient Asturian kings rest.
We’ll continue the day in Cangas de Onís, where we’ll take a walk to learn about its legacy as the first capital of the Kingdom of Asturias. You’ll have 2 hours of free time to have lunch and take photos by the famous Roman bridge. Don’t forget to capture the Cross of Victory hanging beneath its arch, one of the symbols of Asturias.
In the afternoon, the day trip will take us back to the coast, this time to the picturesque village of Lastres. We’ll take a guided tour of this fishing town, famous for its network of steep streets and its impressive views of the Cantabrian Sea.
Finally, we’ll begin the return journey and drop you off at the original meeting point in Gijón, thus concluding this 11-hour day trip.
Changes to the Itinerary
Please note that the Covadonga Lakes are located within the Picos de Europa National Park, whose regulations govern parking and access order. It’s also possible that the park may close access for organizational reasons or that time spent at the lakes may be reduced without prior notice, as it is a national park. If this happens, we’ll dedicate more time to the other stops on the day trip.
Access to the Covadonga Lakes
Depending on the parking space assigned by the park, access to the Covadonga Lakes will include climbing either 200 or 400 steps.
