Oaxaca Free Walking Tour
Tour Details
At the scheduled time, we’ll meet at Jardín del Pañuelito to begin this free tour of Oaxaca. Did you know that in the 16th century this city was known as Verde Antequera? Accompanied by a local b, we’ll explore the cultural and architectural heart of this UNESCO World Heritage city.
After a brief introduction to the city’s history, we’ll admire the Ethnobotanical Garden, a fascinating space that showcases the region’s rich flora and natural traditions. From there, we’ll head to the Church of Santo Domingo de Guzmán, considered a true jewel of Oaxacan Baroque architecture.
We’ll continue walking uphill toward the Temple of Carmen Alto and cross Plaza de la Cruz de Piedra. At this point, we’ll reveal the origins of the Guelaguetza, the most important and colorful festival in Oaxaca.
Next, we’ll head down to the Church of Sangre de Cristo and admire the impressive façade of the Macedonio Alcalá Theater. We’ll also pass by the San Pablo Cultural Center and the Museum of Oaxacan Painters, key places for understanding the artistic legacy present throughout the city.
Finally, we’ll arrive at Oaxaca’s Zócalo, the heart of local social life, and end the free tour in front of the Metropolitan Cathedral of Our Lady of the Assumption after 2 hours. Here, we’ll see the perfect blend of indigenous and Spanish influences that shaped Oaxaca’s unique identity.
