Tarragona Free Walking Tour
Tarragona Free Walking Tour
We'll meet at the Creu de Terme de Sant Antoni at the indicated time, to set off on a free walking tour of Tarragona. Ready to explore the storied past of this port city in Catalonia? Let's go!
Our journey begins as we view the architectural remains of the Wall of Tarragona, a Roman wall that once surrounded the ancient Roman city of Tarraco. Did know it was one of the most prominent cities on the Iberian Peninsula during Roman times?
Next, we'll head to the Tarragona Cathedral. Like much of the city, it's steeped in Roman history. Built on Roman, Visigoth, and Arab sites., it was declared a national monument in 1905.
From here, we'll check out the oldest shop in Catalonia as we make our way to the Jewish Quarter. As we stroll the cobblestoned streets, we'll learn about the history of the town, having gone through many transformations over time.
Then, we'll arrive at the Roman circus and amphitheater, both declared a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Can you imagine the chariot races and gladiator fights that took place here over 2,000 years ago?
Continuing our tour, we'll stroll past the Town Hall building and also where castellers practice how to create dizzying human towers, a tradition that goes back centuries. You'll be amazed!
Finally, we'll arrive at the Balcony of the Mediterranean, a 40-metre-high (131 ft) viewpoint where we'll enjoy a stunning view of the Mare Nostrum. Don't forget to touch the railing, they say it's lucky!
After 2.5 hours of sightseeing, we'll bring our free tour to an end at this final point.
