Discover the monumental heritage of the holy city of Kairouan when you take our fantastic trip. You will also visit the amphitheater of Djem, often referred to as "the Roman Coliseum of Africa".
Kairouan and Djem Trip
After picking you up from your hotel, we will head into the interior of Tunisia to visit Kairouan, the fourth holy city of Islam after Mecca, Medina, and Jerusalem.
Then we enter the Great Mosque of Kairouan to admire the ornate decoration of this World Heritage Site. We will see the mihrab (a niche facing in the direction of Mecca), the prayer rooms, and the courtyard at the foot of the minaret. This elegant tower and the roof domes are the star architectural elements of this mosque, one of the first to be built on African soil.
Our tour through Kairouan continues with a visit to the so-called Mosque of the Barber. As we admire the beautiful architecture and ceilings, which resemble the Alhambra in Granada, you will hear all about how this monument earned its name. Afterward, we will make a stop of about one hour in the center of Kairouan to have lunch in the fabulous Hotel La Kasbah or other similar venue, depending on availability.
Feeling reenergized, we will travel to the amphitheater of El Djem, located only one hour outside Kairouan. The magnificent, ancient enclosure where the gladiators fought, will remind us of the famous Coliseum in Rome. In fact, Djem is the largest amphitheater in Africa and the third-largest in the world, surpassed only by the Italian capital and that of Capua in Campania, Italy.
We will visit the grandstand, which could hold up to 30,000 spectators, and the arena where the fighting took place. At the archeological site of El Djem located next to the amphitheater, we can delve even deeper into the ancient Roman history of this area.
From El Djem, we will finally return to the hotels of Susa, Hammamet, and Tunis.
