A bit of history

The Bridge of Sighs is a masterpiece of Baroque architecture. The work is attributed to architect Antonio Contin—Antonio da Ponte's grandson, who helped him in the reconstruction of the Rialto Bridge.

Why is it called the Bridge of Sighs?

The bridge connects the Doge's Palace in Venice with the former prison of the Inquisition. It is said that this bridge got its name from the sighs of the prisoners who, crossing this passage, would see daylight and the beauty of the city for the last time before being executed or locked up.

How can you see it?

The Bridge of Sighs is located a short walk from St. Mark's Square. You can admire its exterior by walking around or taking a gondola ride. To cross it, however, you will have to buy a ticket to the Doge's Palace or book a guided tour.
