History

The Acropolis as we know it today was developed in the Golden Age of Athens in the 5th century BC. This was a period during which Athens was seen to be at its cultural peak, and the massive construction project undertaken on the Acropolis was to symbolise this success.

Why visit the Acropolis?

Overlooking the Greek capital city, the Acropolis of Athens (A UNESCO World Heritage site) is the most complete ancient Greek monumental complex in the world today.

The Parthenon is the most famous temple, and the crowning feature of the Acropolis. A feat of ancient engineering, this magnificent structure was the most lavish temple the Greek mainland had ever seen, and it continues to amaze millions of visitors each year.

When is the best time to visit?

The best time to visit the Acropolis of Athens is right as it opens, which is generally at 8 am, or right at last entry before the site closes. When you're planning your trip, we recommend coming during spring or autumn, to avoid peak tourist season crowds and the heat.
