St. Nicholas of Bari Tour
Upon booking the tour you can choose one of the following options. Both start from Piazza San Nichola in Bari.
Full Tour of St. Nicholas (2.5 hours)
We'll start the tour by visiting the beautiful Pontifical Basilica di San Nicola. The Basilica, constructed in 1098, is of great religious significance and an important pilgrimage destination for Roman Catholics and Orthodox Christians. Once inside the place of worship, we'll admire the extraordinary collection of sacred art and the crypt which stores St Nicholas' remains.
Afterwards, we'll visit the nearby Museo Nicoliano, which displays the Basilica's history and relics including epigraphs, scrolls, manuscripts, paintings and vestments. Did you know that St. Nicholas is nowadays linked to Father Christmas? The original Greek Saint was associated with several miracles and the patron saint of both children and gifts. However, after the reformation he became unpopular but someone had to deliver presents to children so in the UK he became Father Christmas, and later Santa Claus in the USA.
We'll continue onto the St. Nicholas Fortress, a defensive stronghold built to protect the city's treasures, and then admire the Church of Saint Gregory's exterior which was once demolished to make space for the Basilica.
The tour will finish two and a half hours later back at the meeting point.
Guided visit around St. Nicholas' Basilica (1 hour)
If you choose the guided visit around St. Nicholas' Basilica, we'll start by admiring the impressive work of art that is the north facade, Porta dei Leoni. From here, we'll enter the Basilica, where we'll marvel at the large transversal arches and the beautifully carved spires.
After an hour wandering around the Basilica, we'll go inside the crypt. You'll discover the history of St. Nicholas and in particular the legend of Longinus, a Roman soldier who pierced the side of Jesus with the Holy Lance.
