History

The Puerta de Alcalá was constructed in the 18th century by the order of Charles III, serving as one of the five royal gates that gave access to the city. Built in neoclassical style, the gate received travellers arriving from the direction of the city of Alcalá de Henares, giving the gate its name.

What to do at the Puerta de Alcalá

Located in the heart of Madrid, the Puerta de Alcalá is a stone's throw from a number of the city's other major landmarks. You can stroll through the Retiro Park, check out the Prado Museum and the Reina Sofia, or simply have a drink in one of the restaurants in the Plaza de la Independencia!
