Rising above the historic center of Málaga, Málaga Cathedral is one of southern Spain’s most distinctive religious monuments. Its mix of architectural styles and incomplete design make it instantly recognizable.

Background and history

Construction of the cathedral began in the 16th century on the site of a former mosque, following the Christian reconquest of the city. Work continued for more than two centuries, blending Renaissance and Baroque elements. Due to a lack of funds, only one tower was completed, earning the cathedral its popular nickname, La Manquita, or “the One-Armed Lady.”

Inside, visitors can explore chapels, altarpieces, and a richly carved wooden choir considered one of the finest in Spain.
