Lo más habitual para ir al archipiélago de Madeira desde el Portugal continental es volar desde el aeropuerto de Lisboa, Oporto o Faro. El trayecto en avión tiene aproximadamente 1,5 horas de duración. En caso de querer ir en barco a Madeira, lo mejor es hacerlo desde Portimão, aunque la ruta marítima es menos frecuente y tarda alrededor de 24 horas.
