From the largest market in Europe to the emblematic Stalinist architecture of the Latvian Academy of Sciences: discover Riga's hidden gems on this alternative free walking tour.
Alternative Riga Free Tour Itinerary
After meeting your guide at 12 pm in front of St Peter's Church in Riga's historic city centre, you'll leave the old town behind and embark on your alternative walking tour around the Latvian capital.
Your route will take you to Maskachka, or the Moscow District, which earned its name in the Middle Ages, when the authorities of Riga did not allow Russian traders to live in the city centre, forcing them to settle in this area on the banks of the Daugava River. Centuries later, during the Nazi occupation of the city, it was used as a Jewish ghetto.
The first stop on your tour will be the Riga Central Market, the biggest market and bazaar in Europe, whose distinctive pavilions were built by reusing old German Zeppelin hangars. Wander between different street food stalls selling typical local delicacies... there will be time for you to grab a treat if something tempts you! Just behind the market, you'll find yourself in the Warehouse District, known for being one of the liveliest areas of the city.
Next, you'll make your way over to the Latvian Academy of Sciences, an imposing building representative of typical Stalinist architecture, before strolling past the area's typical wooden houses. You'll be captivated by the picturesque traditional feel of the neighbourhood!
Your alternative free tour of Riga will come to an end at around 2:30 pm next to the Freedom Monument, a memorial dedicated to honouring soldiers killed during the Latvian War of Independence.
