Discover the beautiful landscapes of northern Argentina following the famous ‘Train to the Clouds’ railway line that ascends to more than 13,000 feet.

Road to the Clouds Safari Itinerary

At 6:30 am, we will meet up in the centre of Salta to start our route. We will leave the city behind to reach the magical desert landscapes of the Quebrada del Toro mountain pass, including the spectacular ruins of Santa Rosa de Tastil.

Next to the Quebrada del Toro, we will see the Railway to the Clouds. The name is no exaggeration. The engine and wagons run along a line to more than 13,000 feet high. The railway zigzags its way up the steep mountainside to within touching distance of the clouds. It is the third highest train in the world.

Our route will continue to the Polvorilla Viaduct, where you'll make a brief stop to admire the impressive structure, before heading on to the town of San Antonio de los Cobres, where you'll enjoy a delicious lunch. You'll be offered different options including soup, empanadas, chicken and pasta, so that you can tailor your meal to your tastes. What's more, you'll have the opportunity to taste a mouthwatering typical local dessert!

With our stomachs full and energy replenished, we'll head back onto the road through the Puna on Route 38, where you'll take in the majesty of the immense Andean landscape and see some of the llamas and vicuñas that live in the region. Reaching the Salinas Grandes, one of the largest salt flats in the world, you'll stroll around a true white desert of unique beauty.

We will continue the route taking the zigzagging road called the Cuesta del Lipan to the town of Purmamarca. We will observe the amazing natural environment from the Hill of the Seven Colours, which earns its names from the tonal palette of the rocks which line the Quebrada de Humahuaca mountain pass.

After a day trip you'll never forget, we will return to Salta at around 9 pm.
