Be seduced by the rhythms, dance, color, and magic of one of the most popular musical traditions of Uruguay when you take this fabulous candombe tour around south Montevideo.
What is candombe?
Candombe is an important Uruguayan cultural tradition involving drumming music and dance and is a principal feature of Montevideo's carnival. The rhythms and colors of this performance have their roots in the fusion of African slave music and traditional European folk dance. Modern-day candombe is accompanied by drumming music and other instruments such as guitar and piano.
We will meet up in Independence square in the heart of Montevideo. From there, we will take an agreeable walk through the historic Barrio Sur neighborhood. Our guide will lead you through the district and tell you all about its history and close links to the important Uruguayan tradition of candombe.
After hearing all the secrets and fascinating facts about the musical performance, we will head to a candombe workshop where you will learn to play catchy rhythms and dance to the upbeat music.
Finally, we will head to the practice rooms of a well-known local candombe troupe, where you will witness their rehearsals for the official Montevideo Carnival competition, the most important event in the country's calendar.
Once the rehearsal has come to an end, we will end our tour of Barrio Sur and bid farewell.
