Saliencia Lakes Hiking Trip + Bear Watching
Set off from Torrestío on a wonderful hiking route through beautiful Somiedo Park. In this stunning area of Asturias, you will visit the valley of the Saliencia lakes and see magnificent Cantabrian brown bears.
Saliencia Lakes Hiking Trip + Bear Watching
We will start the activity in the Leonese town of Torrestio. There we will meet at 9:30 am at the Alto de La Farrapona car park, located right on the border between the province of León and the Principality of Asturias.
After a brief presentation, we will set off on a hiking route through the Somiedo Natural Park. The low difficulty circuit covers a distance of 5 miles with 1150 feet of elevation. However, we will make several stops to rest and enjoy these beautiful landscapes of the Cantabrian Mountains.
The route takes around the beautiful surroundings of the Saliencia lakes, whose natural space forms part of the Somiedo biosphere reserve. We will first see the lake of La Cueva, located at an altitude of more than 5000 feet. We will then follow the route next to the Almagrera or La Mina lake. We will also approach other famous depressions in the area, such as the spectacular Cerveiriz and Calabazosa lakes.
After 3 hours of walking, we will conclude the hiking route by returning to the Alto de la Farrapona car park. There, we will take a break of approximately one hour so that you can recharge your batteries with the picnic that you bring with you. After lunch, you will have to travel in your own car to Pola de Somiedo, where at 4:30 pm we will set off on a breathtaking route.
Following the guide's vehicle, we will go into the most remote areas of Somiedo to spot Cantabrian brown bears, and discover lots of interesting facts about them! During the tour, which lasts approximately 4 hours, we will make several stops to see other animals such as deer, chamois, wild boar, and wolves. Finally, at 8:30 we will finish the route by driving back to Pola de Somiedo. From there, you can return on your own to Torrestío.
Bear Spotting
Somiedo Nature Reserve is one of the best places in Asturias to see Cantabrian brown bears. However, the animals are unpredictable. The number of specimens we encounter will depend on various factors such as the weather and the reproduction and breeding seasons of the different species.
