History

Pompeii, which fell under Roman rule in the 2nd century BC, is known to have been a wealthy town at the time of the eruption. At the turn of the first century, the town had become a vacation spot for the distinguished citizens of the Roman Empire. In 79 AD, following the eruption of Mount Vesuvius, Pompeii was buried under millions of tonnes of volcanic ash.

The town was then left largely untouched until 1748, when it was rediscovered by explorers in search of ancient artefacts.

Public transport

The easiest way to get to Pompeii (and Herculaneum) is with the Circumvesuviana train, which runs between Naples and Sorrento.

To visit Pompeii from Rome, you can hop on a high-speed train from Roma Termini, and then take a regional train to Pompeii station.

When should you visit?

The best time to visit Pompeii is between November and March. During the summer months, the park will be busy and usually quite hot. We also recommend visiting first thing in the morning after the park opens.
