Guided Tour of the Basilicas of Rome

  • English
  • 3 hours.

Explore some of the most prominent and fascinating churches and basilicas in Rome on a 3-hour guided tour with a professional English-speaking guide expert in History and History of Art.

You’ll start the tour accompanied by your guide by visiting one of the most important churches of the Eternal City.

St. John in Lateran Archbasilica is one of the four papal major basilicas in Rome and the oldest one. Step inside the temple and admire its holy door and its high altar, which is exclusively used by the Pope.  Once you have marveled at its startling interior decoration, you’ll visit St. John’s Baptistery. Once inside its octagonal floor, your guide will tell you about the Emperor Constantine’s mother, Saint Helena, baptized in this basilica according to tradition.

You’ll continue your journey to Basilica San Clemente, which is renowned for its mosaic collection, mostly belonging to the Medieval period. Then, if you wish, you can visit the archaeological site located underneath the church, which were discovered in the nineteenth century.

Leave the Basilica of San Clemente al Laterano and go around the Colosseum until you get to San Pietro in Vincoli, also known as Saint Peter in Chains. This church was founded to house the relic of the chains that were used to imprison Saint Peter in Jerusalem. The shackles are located in a vase in the church. Led by your guide, you’ll discover Michelangelo’s Moses, a majestic and large statue that is at the height of the artist’s "David", located in Florence or "Pietà” in the Vatican City.

Next, you’ll walk along Via Cavour. In less than 10 minutes you’ll get to the Basilica di Santa Maria Maggiore, a beautiful temple that houses numerous masterpieces, including the apse mosaic by Jacopo Torriti called the Coronation of the Virgin and several frescoes by Giovanni Baglione. After this tour, you can carry on your holidays in Rome at your own pace.
