The Rila Monastery, declared a UNESCO World Heritage Site, is located less than two hours by road from Sofia. An example of Orthodox sacred art, this thousand-year-old monument is remarkable both for its rich history and its colorful decoration.

History of the Rila Monastery

Up in the heart of the mountains, Rila Monastery is closely linked to the figure of Ivan Rilski, known as St. John of Rila. This 10th-century hermit chose a cave in the area to dedicate his life to meditation and prayer. After his death, many believers continued his legacy by building a church in his honor, which gradually expanded into the monastery we know today.

The original structure of the Rila Monastery was destroyed during the Ottoman invasion. It was reconstructed, only to be destroyed again in 1833 during a fire. The rebuild is a masterpiece of Bulgarian National Revival of the 19th century.

Rila Monastery Highlights

Rila Monastery is impressive even from the outside, with defensive walls that rise up to 72 feet (22 meters) into the air. Inside, the complex features various buildings, including the Church of the Nativity of the Virgin, with its five domes and stunning frescoes. The Hreliova Tower, the farm, kitchens, and other spaces also stand out during the visit. The monastery also houses more than 300 monk cells and private rooms.
