Discovering Chinese Communist propaganda in Shanghai gives incredible insight into the country's culture and history. Learn all about it on this free walking tour!
Shanghai Propaganda Free Walking Tour Itinerary
Meet your local English-speaking guide at the Changshu Road metro station, near Shanghai's most contemporary district, which is curiously home to the Site of the First National Congress of the Chinese Communist Party, now a museum.
Throughout your free walking tour, you'll delve deep into the history of propaganda in Shanghai, a reflection of the politics of the country considered the most powerful Communist nation in the world. You'll see examples of state-issued posters, billboards and statues throughout the streets, which your expert guide will point out to you, while explaining their significance and the deep-rooted impact they have on daily life.
Wandering through Shanghai, you'll discover some of the city's most emblematic places of interest, including the Shanghai Old Camera Museum, the Propaganda Poster Art Centre, the Shanghai Theatre Academy and the Jing'an Temple. It may be hard to believe from looking at it, but this building - a Buddhist sanctuary since the year 247 AD - was converted into a plastic factory during the Cultural Revolution! Since 1983, it has been returned to its former use as a place of worship.
Following your three-hour free tour of Shanghai's fascinating Communist history, your tour will come to an end by the Jing'an Temple where you can continue to explore the city at your own pace.
