Bulgaria & North Macedonia Monasteries Tour Itinerary
Having been picked up from your hotel at 8:30 am, you'll begin your adventure around some of the most spectacular historic religious buildings in Bulgaria and North Macedonia. After a brief drive, you'll arrive at one of Sofia's most impressive churches.
Entering the Medieval Boyana Church, you'll be dazzled by the incredible Byzantine architecture, murals and frescoes from different periods of history dating back to the 11th century. In total, the church is decorated with 89 scenes depicting 240 human images!
After visiting Boyana Church, you'll leave Sofia behind and continue on your bus journey to the Zemen Monastery, located in the west of Bulgaria. Exploring the church, which is dedicated to St John the Baptist, you'll feel as though you've been transported back in time. It may be small, but its interior is richly decorated with frescoes of Biblical scenes and portraits of historic donors, which are considered to be some of the oldest and most artistically valuable works in the Balkans, along with the Boyana Church. You'll visit the belfry and discover the beautiful surroundings of the monastery, before heading on to your next stop.
The final visit of your day trip will take you across the border with North Macedonia. Surrounded by luscious forests with views of the beautiful Osogovo Mountains, you'll find the Osogovo Monastery, also known as the Monastery of Saint Joachim of Osogovo. After admiring the stunning architecture of the 12th century buildings, you'll enjoy a delicious lunch of traditional North Macedonian cuisine. You'll then have time to continue exploring what is considered to be the country's most beautiful monastery, before returning to the bus for the journey back to Bulgaria.
